I'm slightly ashamed that the Apple Hype Machine has affected me but it clearly has, as today I found myself walking into a shop and buying an iPad from a rather good local Apple reseller.
I went for the 3G version, partly for use when I'm travelling for work, partly because it will be useful abroad but mostly because I know I'd be annoyed later on if I didn't (like all Apple gadgets the upgrade possibilities are poor to non-existent once you've shelled out your money).
I was given an O2 Micro SIM and the instructions seemed simple: eject the SIM, put it back in and follow the onscreen instructions. Except no such instructions appeared.
I synced with iTunes (which involved yet another download of the latest version, which is about the 300th update this year) but still nothing.
I googled for lots of APN settings and none of them made any difference and in the end I gave up, as frankly I have wi-fi at home anyway and life is too short to mess about with settings for too long.
However, a few hours later when I synced with iTunes, I was informed of a "carrier update" which changed my O2 APN settings to:
- APN: ibrowse.o2.co.uk
- Username: browse
- Password: password
...and I now have an new option : Settings->Cellular Data->View Account which offers me a variety of ways I can pay to get online.
Hopefully this will help out a few of the many new UK iPad owners this weekend!
